Ecstatic Dance

Ecstatic/Sober Dance is a form of movement practice that encourages freedom, self-expression, and connection to the present moment. In this dance, participants engage with their bodies in an intuitive, spontaneous way, free from the constraints of choreographed steps or judgments. It’s about letting go of inhibitions and fully embracing the rhythm of the music, often in a safe, sober environment where participants can be fully present and aware.

This practice is rooted in mindfulness and self-discovery, with the intention of cultivating a deeper connection to one’s body, emotions, and inner self. Ecstatic/Sober Dance is not about performing for others; it’s about personal liberation, joy, and the transformative power of movement. Whether you are dancing for personal catharsis, meditation, or simply to have fun, it provides a space where individuals can explore their own unique expression while experiencing a sense of unity and freedom. It’s a celebration of being fully alive, grounded, and conscious while in motion.

Dance of Awareness

The DoA cycle - sensing, grounding, expressing, releasing, connecting and completing - follows an energetic wave, charging and discharging over the course of a session. The cycle is based on psychodynamic theory and developmental psychology. The phases of the cycle follow themes of human development from pre-birth through to around five years. This is the time period associated with the growing sense of self which becomes embodied through early experience, and which sets the patterns for adulthood. This gives the mover the opportunity to re-experience their formative years of early development, explore old imprints, and discover new patterns of moving and relating.
